Lady Jags Wrap up Inaugural Season of Flag Football

Flag football's rapid growth has led to thousands of girls competing at the high school level. Now that it is an officially sanctioned sport, these athletes are leaving their mark on history through a state-wide girls flag football league.

New Manchester High's Lady Jags recently wrapped up their history-making first season. They started the season strong with lots of interest from eager students wanting to be a part of the fastest growing team sport in the country.

Coach Shannon Baker says the 17 girls and four team managers at New Manchester High School are excited to be a part of this milestone. She says they have all given their personal best this season. "This has been an incredible season for all of us, including the coaching staff," she says. "Everything we've accomplished this season has been a team effort. It's been an honor to coach a team where everyone's a winner."

Baker believes extracurricular activities like flag football build stronger students. "Team sports not only reinforce lessons learned in the classroom, but they also provide students with the opportunity to apply problem-solving and cooperation skills in real-world settings," she continues. "Flag football has allowed our girls to improve their work ethic, leadership skills, and self-confidence."

Coach Chris Frazier shares coaching duties with Coach Baker. Frazier says part of what makes this team a joy to coach is their willingness to learn. "None of the girls have played flag football before. Only three of the team members knew about football before the season," Frazier says. "So they were excited but had a lot to learn about the sport in a short amount of time."

This enthusiasm has generated an overwhelming amount of support from the New Manchester High School community. Frazier says students have been highly supportive of the new team. "It was hard recruiting students last year because most students were virtual. Now that everyone is back, students are already asking about next year. But the support has been schoolwide. Our biggest supporters have been the boys football team," he adds.

DCSS Athletic Director Eric Collins says Lithia Springs High School and Douglas County High School also have flag football teams. Douglas County High’s flag football team is in its second season.  The Flag Football State Championship begins the week after Thanksgiving.
