LSHS falls in state championship

LSHS Drops Triple-Overtime Thriller in State Championship

Lithia Springs High School’s (LSHS) flag football team fell just short of a Class 5A-6A state title Thursday, as they lost 6-0 to Dodge County High School (DCHS) in a triple-overtime thriller.

“I’m very proud of this team,” said LSHS head coach Kendra Pleasants. “I’m proud of their effort, I’m proud of the way they worked hard throughout the season, and I’m proud of their performance today.”

On a blustery afternoon at Georgia State University’s Center Parc Stadium, the Lady Lions’ defense was locked in from the game’s first snap. On the second play from scrimmage, Aniya Moore recorded her first of two interceptions of the day to give LSHS the ball.

Unfortunately, the Lady Lions were unable to score and gave the ball back to DCHS after four plays.

The rest of the first half was a defensive stalemate until DCHS marched into Lady Lion territory with seconds remaining in the half. However, the Lady Lions' defense stood tall again, forcing a turnover on downs to end the half.

After halftime, both teams locked in again defensively until LSHS marched into Lady Indian territory late in the half. Unfortunately, LSHS was unable to find points on the drive and turned the ball over on downs to send the game to overtime.

The first two overtime periods mirrored regulation, with neither team able to find the end-zone. But after forcing an LSHS turnover on downs, the Lady Indians put together two nice runs before scoring on a fourth-and-goal play to win the game. A player looks to run after making a catch in the state championship

“It’s our inaugural season and first time playing flag football, but the ladies made it all the way to the state as state runners-up,” said LSHS principal Travis Joshua. “It’s not the goal that we wanted, but in terms of expectations, I can’t say at the beginning of the season I expected us to be here. So I’m extremely proud, and they fought hard all the way to the end.”

In their inaugural season, the Lady Lions finished 15-4, and head coach Kendra Pleasants is excited about the team’s future after having so much success in the first year.

“The best is yet to come, so I’m very excited,” said Pleasants. “We’re going back to the drawing board, and we’ll be back next year to play for the state championship.”
