Bright Star students take part in Drop Everything and Read Day.

Bright Star Elementary School Media Specialist Elizabeth Shadix said her passion is to help her students find a love for reading early so they will always love to read.

The school recently took part in an activity to help further that passion for reading.

All Bright Star students participated in the Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) event on September 30 as part of Georgia Reads Day, a state initiative to encourage everyone to read.

Shadix said students were allowed to choose books to read for 20 minutes during the event. Teachers at Bright Star allowed students to read around the room using nontraditional seating. In the media center, students sat on bean bags, stools and regular chairs during their reading sessions. The school’s physical education teacher even allowed students to get comfortable and read around the gym.

“DEAR is a great way to promote fun and exciting reading times for students,” Shadix said. “During this time, students are allowed to read for pleasure without having classroom assignments or tests associated with their reading time. Graphic Novels are a HUGE favorite for DEAR times.”

Shadix’s theme in the media center this year is “Reading is An Adventure That Can Take You Anywhere.”

“My goal is for the BSES students to truly believe that,” she said.
