American Idol winner Ruben Studdard will headline a patriotic "Heroes Among Us" concert May 24 at Legacy Arena to honor military veterans. The Douglas County Education Foundation is presenting the event to recognize veterans who serve as educators in the Douglas County and Carrollton City school systems, along with veteran community members from the area.
Comedian Jonathan Slocumb will host the event, featuring performances by students alongside actor-singer Elijah Kelley and Paris Bennett.
"We are thrilled to host this special concert celebrating the contributions of our veterans,” Douglas County Schools Superintendent Dr. Trent North said. “The Douglas County School System has tremendous respect for those who have served our country and who now serve our students and the community.”
Dr. North added: “This event will not only provide beautiful patriotic music but will also create an opportunity for our students to honor the sacrifice, courage and dedication of our veterans. These heroes represent the levels of service and commitment that we hope to teach all our students."
Heroes Among Us awards will be presented to educator veterans and community members. Nominations are open until 5 p.m. on May 14.
Eligible nominees must be honorably discharged veterans or active-duty service members. School employees nominated must have at least five years of service with their district and remain active employees for the 2024-2025 school year.
Nominations can be submitted via the Veteran Educator Nomination Form and Community Hero Nomination Form.
