MAES students on Tybee Island

Fifth-graders from North Douglas and Mason Creek Elementary schools recently explored the DCSS students in SavannahEcosystem of Savannah, engaging in interactive learning activities that brought classroom lessons to life.

From historic streets to aquatic adventures, it was an unforgettable expedition filled with learning and laughter.

“I began working on this trip at the end of last school year because I felt our students deserve a valuable learning experience outside of the classroom that they will never forget,” remarked Brandon Lockett, a fifth-grade teacher at Mason Creek Elementary.”

As their first overnight trip, students experienced a play at Savannah Children’s Theatre, learning about idioms and alliteration. Later that night, they enjoyed a spooky ghost tour through Savannah’s historic district followed by a visit to Fort Pulaski to spend time at Tybee Island’s beach.

To close the evening, students enjoyed a formal dinner and dance aboard the Georgia Queen riverboat. The exciting voyage concluded with a visit to the First African Baptist Church, where students learned about slavery and the Underground Railroad.

“The trip allowed our students the opportunity to bond with classmates, learn new skills and step outside of their comfort zones,” said Lockett.
