TOTY Semifinalists Headshots

Six of the Douglas County School System’s most dedicated educators learned Thursday they are semifinalists for the district’s top teaching honor.

Superintendent Dr. Trent North and other district administrators delivered the news to the teachers in their classrooms during a surprise Prize Patrol visit that included balloons and a personalized mini chalkboard.

The semifinalists are:

High School
Michella Hanna, Douglas County High School
Dr. Latoya Thomas, New Manchester High School

Middle School
Felisa Holston, Chestnut Log Middle School
Kelly Bunker, Fairplay Middle School

Elementary School
Brandi Rayner, New Manchester Elementary School
Emily Moss, Winston Elementary School

The Teacher of the Year process began in the spring, when all 34 school campuses named their Teachers of the Year.

All 34 TOTYs submitted applications and letters of recommendation, which were scored over the summer by a panel of judges made up of current and former school system employees and community leaders.

Next, the judges will observe each semifinalist teaching in their classroom, followed by in-person interviews.

Three finalists — one at each level — and the overall District Teacher of the Year will be announced at the annual Teacher of the Year Banquet on Sept. 11 at Douglas County High School.
