Mason Creek Middle School students elected new Student Council representatives through a unique election process that culminated with ballots cast Aug. 29.
Assistant Principal Michael Owens said teachers from teams in all three grade levels nominated four boys and four girls. The nominees for each team then campaigned for a week through various methods, including posters and videos.
"Our election process is unique because it blends teacher insight with student choice," Owens said. "Teachers nominate students who have demonstrated leadership, and then peers affirm that leadership through their votes. This ensures that representatives are both recognized by staff and trusted by classmates. It allows for shared ownership in leadership and gives students a real voice in shaping their school community."
During the election, students took part in the democratic process by casting their ballots for one boy and one girl on each team to serve as their representatives on the Student Council.
Some teachers even created “polling stations” and tied the experience to their social studies classes.
“We're so proud of our young leaders for taking their responsibilities seriously and helping to choose the students who will represent them this year,” Media Specialist Jennifer Baker said. “We can't wait to see what the newly elected Student Council accomplishes!”
