Executive Director of School Nutrition Danielle Freeman and a cafeteria manager pose with a tray of watermelon.

This school year, the Douglas County School Nutrition Department is serving even more fresh, Students eat watermelonseasonal produce. For the first time, every DCSS cafeteria served watermelon.

Previously, the sweet fruit was only available at a few schools. However, as part of August's Harvest of the Month program, the department was able to order enough watermelon to serve 16,200 portions.

"The goal of Harvest of the Month is to promote healthy eating by educating students about seasonal, locally grown produce, supporting local farmers, and connecting the food system with the school day through nutrition, agriculture, and classroom lessons," explained Danielle Freeman, Executive Director of School Nutrition. "The program aims to increase students' preference and consumption of fruits and vegetables, build excitement for school meals, and foster a greater appreciation for local food sources."

Each month, the Harvest of the Month program showcases a different fruit or vegetable, allowing students to discover new flavors and textures during their regular lunch. This September, the program spotlights apples, and students will sample three to four different varieties.

This year, the School Nutrition department is also introducing special breakfast promotions. Elementary students will enjoy crispy hash browns with their morning meal, while middle and high school students will enjoy a Hot Honey Chicken Biscuit on Sept. 17th.

The School Nutrition Department has many more surprises in store this school year. National School Lunch Week is Oct. 13-17, and the department looks forward to introducing even more new foods, promoting healthy eating habits, and engaging students in nutrition education.
