While many high school students spent their summer break relaxing, Lithia Springs High School senior Angelic Aponte was completing Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri as part of the Army Reserve's Split Training Option.

The program allows high school juniors to enlist in the Army Reserve and complete their basicAngelic Aponte training during the summer before their senior year, giving students like Aponte a head start on their military careers. The Split Training Option also provides students with military training, leadership experience, and educational benefits while allowing them to complete their high school education.

Aponte explained she completed the program because she wanted a head start on her career. "I've always had the mindset that if you start working early, then your future will be easier,” she said.

The senior left for boot camp on May 27 and returned on Aug. 7. She described the nearly three-month experience as challenging. But for Aponte, the hardest part was being away from her family.

Despite the difficulties, Aponte has no regrets about her decision.

"The overall experience was very cool," she said. "I met a lot of great people that I've remained in contact with. I would do it again if I had to."

She explained that being a part of Lithia Springs High School's JROTC program provided invaluable preparation for military training.

"I already knew all the drill movements that were taught in basic training," she said. "JROTC also taught me morals and leadership skills, which were also taught during basic training."

Aponte will complete her high school studies ahead of schedule this December. Following graduation, Aponte intends to enlist in the Army full-time with plans to study engineering.

"Angelic's story is a reminder that there are many paths to success after high school," said LSHS Principal Felicia Jones. "We are incredibly proud of her dedication and can't wait to see all that she accomplishes."
