Two Douglas County School System teachers recently received an unexpected honor when a representative from Southwire Company visited their schools.
Lisa Carruth from South Douglas Elementary and Erica Holcomb from Factory Shoals Elementary were named winners in the company’s annual “My Favorite Teacher” contest and received $1,000 for their classrooms.
Carruth’s recognition came through a nomination from a parent whose son was in her second-grade class. According to the nomination, the student entered the school year reading two years below grade level, but thanks to Carruth's dedication and persistence, reached grade level by the end of the year. The parent noted that her son transformed from a child who had never loved school into one who was excited about learning.
"I was very surprised and humbled by this recognition," Carruth said. "Honestly, just knowing that a parent thought enough of me to submit a nomination was more than enough of an honor. This was so unexpected because I was just doing what I see my teammates and colleagues doing every single day for their students."
Carruth plans to use the $1,000 award to supplement her classroom library and purchase additional supplies to help her students learn and grow throughout the year.
Holcomb was also nominated by a parent. She believes in the quote: “Behind every confident student is a teacher who quietly fought for them to be seen, heard and believed in.”
“I was completely taken by surprise and deeply humbled,” Holcomb said. “It is a reminder that God is always on time! Being nominated and winning this award will provide me with teacher resources, manipulatives for hands-on learning, and sensory tools for our students who are in our PEC program!”
The "My Favorite Teacher" contest is part of Southwire's annual "Back to School" initiative, now in its 21st year. This year, the company awarded $1,000 each to 21 deserving teachers across communities where Southwire has a presence. The contest allows students and parents to nominate educators who have made a positive impact on their lives.
