Staff including Dr. Araceli Hurley speak at the Newcomer Center Parent Night.

DCSS Success Center Principal Dr. Andre Touchard and faculty members recently hosted a Parent Parents look at their phones during the Newcomer Center Parent Night.Night for the families of students enrolled in the district’s Newcomer Center program.

Students who are new to the United States and to the English Language are transitioned into their Douglas County base schools through intensive language development at the Newcomer Center. Housed in the Success Center building and facilitated under the direction of Touchard, opportunities to learn and develop academic language skills are provided in a focused, nurturing environment during this half-day program.

Newcomer Center teachers Dr. Araceli Hurley, Allen Newsome and Tammie Gilmore gave tours of their classrooms and shared information to help parents gain a deeper understanding of daily routines and resources.

A valuable Q&A session took place, which focused on expectations for all students.

“We had such a great time during Parent Night at the Newcomer Center,” said Hurley. She extended a heartfelt thank you to all who attended.
