Eighth graders at Factory Shoals Middle School are taking their learning beyond the textbook. By
engaging in classroom debates, they are bringing their argument writing skills to life.
Using ThinkCERCA materials and targeted instruction, debate teams researched various topics and presented compelling arguments to their classmates. These debates gave students experience in critical thinking and persuasive communication. In addition, they help students build skills that will serve them both in and out of the classroom.
Throughout the activity, students learned to clearly introduce their claims, distinguish their positions from opposing viewpoints, and support their arguments with strong, relevant evidence. Students also practiced anticipating counterarguments and developing thoughtful rebuttals while building confidence in their ability to speak clearly and persuasively.
"It was exciting to see students apply what they've learned in such a dynamic way," said media specialist Katrina Barnett. "They weren't just writing arguments on paper. Beyond that, they were thinking on their feet, listening actively to different perspectives, and speaking with real confidence. These are life skills that go far beyond any single assignment."
