Legacy Arena recently welcomed Douglas County students, school leaders and community
volunteers for the 25th Annual Power In Truth Conference (PIT)—an event dedicated to empowering middle and high school students to make healthy choices and avoid risky behaviors. For the past 25 years, PIT has partnered with Cobb & Douglas Public Health to promote education, strengthen character and address critical issues facing today’s youth.
Keynote speaker, Chris James of Black Boys Better and Creative Connections, captivated students with his inspiring message of empowerment.
“I want you to remember your power,” James said. “Your power is your awareness.”
A panel discussion also provided participants with invaluable insights about the dangers of potent drugs such as fentanyl and heroin. Panelists shared personal stories of overcoming obstacles and encouraged youth to make positive choices for their future.
Cobb & Douglas Public Health Youth Development Coordinator Dammie Ode-Martins expressed gratitude for the electric atmosphere and outstanding participation.
“The Power in Truth Conference was a tremendous success, and we couldn’t have done it without the incredible effort and support of CDPH staff, Legacy Arena staff, volunteers, PIT planning committee, community organizations, Superintendent North and the Douglas County School System. We’re looking forward to many more successful youth development events like this in the coming years.”
In addition to providing valuable resources to help students develop leadership skills and make informed decisions, the annual conference equipped school advisors and advocates with effective intervention tools.
Since its inception in 2000, Power in Truth has been instrumental to the youth and school
advocates. The award-winning program was selected as a Model Practice by the National Association of County and City Health Officials in 2017 for its exemplary and replicable qualities in response to a local public health need.
