MAES students attend a virtual author visit.

Mason Creek Elementary School fifth-graders explored list poetry and character development with award-winning authors Kwame Alexander and Erin Entrada Kelly during a recent virtual author study.

Alexander, known for his books like “The Crossover” and “Booked,” read an excerpt from one of his books and led a mini-lesson on list poetry.

Kelly shared information about her new book and guided students through a writing lesson on character development.

“Our students asked thoughtful questions, wrote creative poems and learned from two masters of their craft,” media specialist Katie Henry said, adding that Mason Creek will have other similar opportunities throughout the school year.

Henry thanked supporters of the media center whose donation made the virtual author study possible, noting their support helps students "continue to grow and love writing."
