The Douglas County School System Police Department spent Tuesday morning spreading
holiday cheer to Douglas County students during its sixth annual Shop with a Cop event. With the help of generous donations from community sponsors, local law enforcement officers accompanied students as they selected items from their holiday wish lists for themselves and their families.
Chief Walter Williams expressed gratitude for the continued partnership with local businesses and community members who support students during the holiday season.
"I feel blessed that the Douglas County Schools Police have the opportunity to help some students and families in the school system by being able to host the Shop with a Cop Event," he said. "In years past, we've been able to make dreams come true for 60 to 80 students. With the purchase, they are able to pick out shoes, socks, coats, clothing and, of course, toys."
Each year, school counselors select students for participation. This year, approximately 62 students were filled with joy as they spent $200 on their favorite items.
“All the work that goes into this event is worth it to see the smiles on the faces of the students,”
said School Resource Officer John Jackson.
Donations from several community sponsors helped make Shop with a Cop a memorable event for students. Sponsors included GAR, Inc. Heating and Cooling; Rotary Foundation of Douglas County, Inc.; Lithia Springs Ford; John Thornton Chevrolet; Scott Evans Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram; Chick-fil-A Thornton Rd.; Affordable Body Shop; Mason Electric, Inc.; Gable Sporting Goods; Atlanta West Jewelry; Connally, Jordan & Associates PC; ABS Automotive & Towing; Lucky Strike Bowling; PKS Paving & Concrete Construction; Bankhead Chiropractic; Modern Woodmen Insurance; and Turners Feed and Seed.
“I also want to extend a special thanks to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Douglasville Police Department and 911,” said Williams. “This event would not be possible without our community partners. We are truly grateful for their support in putting smiles on our student’s faces this holiday season.”
