The Douglas County School System is taking a proactive approach to school safety by installing electronic sensing equipment in schools districtwide beginning next month.

Electronic sensing is a screening system that uses electronic sensors to detect prohibited items in bags and pockets. It operates in real time as students and visitors walk at their normal pace through scanners. The technology is currently used in school systems across the country and in other Georgia districts.

The decision to implement detection systems represents the latest phase in the Douglas County School System’s ongoing commitment to creating safe learning environments for students and staff.

Superintendent Dr. Trent North says the technology is part of a comprehensive, layered security strategy.

"Student safety has always been our highest priority. These measures reflect our commitment to maintaining secure learning environments where every student can focus on academic and personal growth," Dr. North said. "This is a proactive step that represents best practices in school security. Our families should feel confident that we are doing everything possible to protect their children while they are in our care."

Installation of the electronic sensing equipment will begin next month and is expected to be completed at all schools within the next few months. Dr. North says these security installations are not in response to any specific incident or immediate threat. Instead, it represents the implementation of best practices in school safety.

The electronic sensing equipment will complement Douglas County's existing security measures, which include trained Douglas County School System Police Officers, Raptor Visitor Management protocols, card access entry systems, and video camera surveillance throughout school buildings.

School principals will communicate with families about specific installation timelines and any adjustments to morning arrival procedures at individual schools to ensure smooth implementation of the new screening process.

The screening process is designed to be efficient and non-disruptive to the school day. Douglas County families are encouraged to review the Code of Conduct and discuss the importance of following school safety procedures with their children as the new system is implemented.
