Teachers, students and distinguished leaders recently united to celebrate the nation's largest reading celebration National Read Across America Week. From March 2-6, schools across the Douglas County School System welcomed special guests who inspired young minds and shared their love for literacy.
Several schools embraced the theme “Champion Kindness,” creating an atmosphere of
empathy, community and connection throughout the week. Media specialists brought the theme to life, orchestrating engaging activities that encouraged students to develop a lifelong love of reading.
“It was amazing to witness so many community members and celebrities share their time and talents with our young readers and embody that readers are truly leaders among our students!” expressed Chapel Hill Elementary media specialist Cameron Sheldon. “They made sure that any spare time available was dedicated to reading. This excitement and dedication were reflected in the impressive number of reading minutes logged by students across the district.”
The excitement continued as local leaders visited classrooms to share their favorite stories, including Superintendent Dr. Trent North and Douglas County Commission Chairwoman Dr. Romona Jackson Jones. With community engagement at the heart of the celebration, they delighted second and third-graders with memorable readings.
"Read Across America is one of my favorite celebrations of the year because it reminds us of what we believe in Douglas County: that a child who loves to read is a child with unlimited possibilities,” said Dr. North. “It has been exciting to see students open a book and experience new ideas and new opportunities.”
Student-athletes also visited elementary and middle schools across the district to keep the
momentum of the reading celebration going, creating a unique opportunity for younger students to interact with older scholars.
“The athletes served as inspiring role models, motivating students to develop a love for reading, prioritizing education and embracing important values like teamwork and sportsmanship,” emphasized FSMS media specialist Katrina Barnett. “This event exemplifies the power of community involvement and the positive influence that older students can have on their younger peers. The scholar-athletes bonded with students, sparking excitement and sharing their own favorite childhood books.”
Meanwhile, Eastside Elementary hosted their 9th annual Ladies Love Literacy event designed to unite students with inspiring women from across the community. Students were captivated by the diverse stories while gaining new insight into the power of books.
“When school, community, and home connect, our students thrive,” said Principal Anitra Paige. “This year’s Ladies Love Literacy brought nearly 50 parents, mentors, and community members into our classrooms to inspire our next generation of readers, and I am honored to see this tradition continue to grow.
