Students at Holly Springs Elementary recently participated in Georgia RESA’s (Regional Education Service Agency) Lit, Love, and Read Month, a literacy campaign held in February and March to encourage a lifelong love of reading. The initiative aligns with the school’s improvement plan goals and reinforces the importance of literacy development across all grade levels.

Throughout the month, teachers implemented best practices through engaging read-alouds and targeted vocabulary instruction. Students selected words from books, used them in sentences, and wrote them on paper hearts for a chance to win weekly prizes. Five winners were selected each week, adding excitement and motivation to the learning process.

Teachers also logged their read-aloud books through the Georgia “Let’s Read” website for opportunities to earn additional incentives while families were encouraged to join in and support reading at home.

“We also celebrated Lit, Love, and Read month with a Dads Read-Along Day,” said Principal Dr. Sherritta Abell. “We had several dads who showed up for our students and read a book aloud to each homeroom. We are very thankful for their participation and support.”

The event proved to be a meaningful success, with more than 25 fathers participating — reading, connecting and being present in the school community.

To further promote engagement, students also participated in a BINGO reading challenge. Jessica Smith, a kindergarten teacher at Holly Springs Elementary, achieved the highest level of participation and was recognized with a prize from Dr. Abell.

“Today’s readers are tomorrow’s leaders,” added Dr. Abell. “We are so thankful for the continued support of our Holly Hawk community.”
