Arbor Station, which also won the Turkey Bowl football championship in November, finishes the season 4-0.

Matthew Brooks, who coaches both teams for Arbor Station, said Chapel Hill got out to a big early lead in the basketball championship. But he said his players weren’t rattled, going on a 10-0 run in the last two minutes of the first half to tie it up.

The game was back-and-forth until the final minute when Chase Thomas’s shot put the Bears up for good.

Thomas averaged 20 points a game during Arbor Station’s championship run and finished with 12 in the title game. Avery Day led the Bears with 15 points in the championship, Landyn Whitton added 10, Josiah Alexander dished out six assists and Titan Edwards led the team with 10 rebounds.

Thomas, Day, Whitton and Faith Campbell were all part of both the basketball and football championships for Arbor Station.

"This league surprises everybody when they see how well it is run and the level of skills these student athletes have,” Brooks said. “Parents come up to me all the time and talk about how surprised they are that it’s third, fourth and fifth graders with how well they play. It is a testament to the hard work Nicole Hall (assistant principal) at Bright Star has put into running this league and the volunteers that make it work."

He added: “The future of Douglas County is bright for basketball.”
