Jasiel Martinez and Ashai Massaquoi of Mount Carmel Elementary School claimed the overall first-place trophy at the District Science Fair. Their project, "Microplastics vs. Ferrofluids," demonstrated how magnetic liquid can be used to extract microplastic particles from water.

Gael Mata Delgado of Dorsett Shoals Elementary earned second place overall for her project, “The Breaking Point.” The third-place trophy went to David Wimberly of New Manchester Elementary School for his “Grip it or Slip It: Testing Traction in Basketball Shoes."

Scholars, coaches, families and support staff also gathered at Chapel Hill High School for a day of mathematical excellence, school spirit and well-deserved celebration during the Spring Math Competition.

Middle school students competed in two formats: an Individual Round and two Group Rounds, each timed and administered digitally via Chromebook. Families filled the stands as winners were announced across sixth, seventh- and eighth-grade divisions both individually and by grade-level teams. Awards were presented for first, second and third place in each category, culminating in the announcement of the overall school champion.

The gym came alive with students cheering, teachers sharing in the excitement, and families on their feet. From the organized arrival flow guided by ROTC volunteers to the final group photo, the event reflected the energy and excellence of Douglas County Schools.

“To every coach, parent, student and staff member who made today possible — thank you,” said Jeremy Anderson, math/science lead. “What happened in the competition today is what Douglas County math looks like at its best.”
