Students passing by the PLC Room at New Manchester High School will now experience more than just a school building and its grounds — they will discover a space designed for healing and remembrance. The newly created Memorial and Wellness Garden offers an opportunity for personal reflection among plants and flowers, while honoring the lives and legacies of those who have left a lasting impact on the Jaguar community.

On April 18, the grand vision became a reality. A team of volunteers and sponsors — led byFormer New Manchester High PTSA President Kemiko Lawrence and a student pose for a photo in the new Memorial and Wellness Garden. Comcast, GreyStone Power, Lowe’s, New Manchester High School PTSA, and the student body — joined forces to create the wellness garden.

Former PTSA president Kemiko Lawrence spearheaded the idea in hopes of honoring the memory of students and staff who impacted their lives, while supporting the ongoing mental and emotional well-being of current students, staff and their families.

"This project was born from the sadness that I and many others felt in the sudden passing of Ms. Henrietta Garner, who served as the NMHS bookkeeper and was beloved by many,” said Lawrence. “Shortly after her passing, we lost several students — one in a tragic car accident and others to gun violence. It is my hope and prayer that students will care for the garden for years to come.”

Lawrence extended appreciation to Principal Casey Bethel, Dr. Moffett, the current PTSA Executive Board, sponsors, volunteers, and all who played a role in bringing the vision to life.

Beyond honoring those lost, the garden also serves a deeper purpose.

Research suggests a strong link between nature and mental health, showing that green spaces can reduce anxiety, lower stress hormones and improve mood. As students help design or maintain the garden, they also gain a sense of control and purpose during a potentially chaotic time. Ultimately, the garden serves as a calming environment where students can step away from the intensity of school and life to regulate their emotions and find peace.

“The first day after it was completed, I saw a student sitting on a bench in the garden while reading a book,” said Bethel. “The memorial garden provides another outlet for students and teachers, and adds to the sense of belonging at New Manchester High. It immediately makes our school a happier place for everyone.”

Additional sponsors and donors include Chick-fil-A, CoBank, Urban League of Greater Atlanta Young Professionals and Hayes Development Agency.

A fundraising campaign will kick off in August 2026 to support continued enhancements and long-term maintenance of the garden.
