Families at Bright Star Elementary School received free books as part of a special open house in the media center focused on building home libraries and fostering a love of reading.

This was the first year of the special event in the school’s media center, and it took place during the annual Sneak-a-Peek on Aug. 3. Families were able to explore the media center, connect with staff and browse more than 3,000 books donated to the school.

Media Specialist Elizabeth Shadix said approximately 300 families selected up to 10 free books to take home, ensuring the students had new reading materials long after the evening ended.

“The event highlighted the importance of providing children with access to books beyond the classroom,” Shadix said. “Research consistently shows that having books at home supports literacy development, encourages independent reading, and strengthens academic achievement. Thanks to the generosity of donors and community support, Bright Star families left with bags full of books, helping create lasting opportunities for reading together and inspiring a lifelong love of learning.”
