Smiling faces and warm welcomes filled campuses across the Douglas County School System as students returned for the first day of classes on Aug. 5.

School system staff, including bus drivers, custodians, school nutrition workers, educators and administrators, greeted 24,993 students enrolled across the district this year.

Superintendent Dr. Trent North visited schools throughout the day and enjoyed the excitement in the air.

"There is nothing like the first day of school," said Dr. North. "Walking through our hallways today, I saw many proud parents and students eager to learn. It's a reminder of why we serve students, and I could not be prouder of our DCSS family for making every one of them feel welcome."

The district also welcomed several new principals this year, who are settling into their new roles and building relationships with students, staff and families. Sarah Brownlow now leads Factory Shoals Elementary, Dr. Tameka Scott is the new principal at Eastside Elementary, and Meghan Rathel is the new principal at Winston Elementary. Michal Sims stepped in as principal of Douglas County High School, Jessica Tyson-Ward now leads Beulah Elementary, Dr. Amanda Zito is the new principal at Mason Creek Middle School, and James Richards took over at Stewart Middle School.

Students also returned to two newly expanded campuses this year. At Chapel Hill High School, an 18-classroom academic addition opened its doors to students on day one, providing new space for learning. South Douglas Elementary also welcomed students into its new academic addition, which includes additional classrooms.
