Erin Johnson receives her championship ring at halftime of an AHS scrimmage.

Erin Johnson has set the bar high for the gymnastics program at Alexander High School.

The junior won the beam at the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAAA Gymnastics State Championship in April.

During an Aug. 14 halftime ceremony, she received her state championship ring at the Cougars' football scrimmage against Starr's Mill.

"Becoming a State Champion and having the honor of representing AHS is an accomplishment that I will cherish forever," said Johnson, who is also a varsity cheerleader at Alexander. "What better way to have a State Championship Ring Ceremony than under Friday Night Lights where I am cheering on the Cougars Football team and having my family and community cheering me on at the same time!

"Everyone's love, encouragement, support, and presence meant so much to me. I will continue to represent AHS with pride knowing that this ring represents more than a championship, it represents the resilience, hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance it took me to earn it."

Johnson's parents, Edwin and Joy, also expressed their gratitude to Superintendent Dr. Trent North, Principal Lora McAdams, Alexander administrators, coaches, the media, family and friends and the entire Douglasville community for the "incredible support of our daughter."

"This historic and momentous occasion means more to us than words can express," her parents said. "We desire for Erin to keep letting her light shine and could not be more proud of the dedication, hard work, and determination that brought her to this moment."
