Fourth- and fifth-graders at Dorsett Shoals Elementary School recently celebrated Georgia Reads Week with a visit from Beth Lincoln, the New York Times bestselling author of the book series “The Swifts.”

Lincoln entertained a packed gymnasium with stories about her childhood and early school years as well as what inspired her to write. Students also received 85 autographed copies of her newest novel, “The Swifts: A Garden of Vipers.”

Principal Kelly Brown expressed gratitude for the visit.

“It was truly a wonderful way to celebrate Georgia Reads Week," Brown said. "I am incredibly grateful that our students had the opportunity to connect with such a talented, inspiring, and energetic author. It was an experience they will remember for years to come.”

Fairplay Middle School also celebrated Georgia Reads Week. Students wore literacy shirts throughout the week and classes set aside dedicated reading time, letting literacy shine across the school.

The Georgia Council on Literacy hosted Georgia Reads Week from Sept. 21-25 as a statewide initiative to support literacy efforts and encourage reading at every age.
