Mount Carmel Students Learn Railroad Safety From Norfolk Southern

Students in grades 1-3 at Mount Carmel Elementary School learned how to stay safe around railroad tracks during an Operation Lifesaver presentation in recognition of "See Tracks? Think Train Week," Sept. 21-27.

Norfolk Southern presenters Ariana Draine, Cherita Hunter Jones, Ernest Jackson and David Taylor shared railroad safety information with students. Through interactive discussions, students learned about the dangers of walking or playing near tracks, the importance of crossing only at designated crossings, obeying warning signals and staying alert around trains.

Draine connected the safety lessons to real-world situations by reading the room and engaging with students, media specialist Kelsey Howard said.

Students also took part in a quick “Ask an Engineer” Q&A session with Taylor.

“At Mount Carmel Elementary, we believe learning extends beyond the classroom,” said Principal Dr. Tenia Boone. “Experiences like this give our students practical knowledge that can help keep them and their families safe. We appreciate our presenters for making railroad safety education meaningful, engaging, and memorable for our young Rams.”
