In many cases, students are called to the principal’s office for doing something wrong. At Chapel A CHMS student holds up his positive referral card.Hill Middle School, they are being called to the principal’s office for doing something right.

School leadership at Chapel Hill Middle has launched a "Pawsitively Great" Referrals Program, recognizing students who go above and beyond by demonstrating kindness, responsibility, leadership and positive behavior. The initiative celebrates Wildcats who demonstrate "The Chapel Hill Way" through their actions, choices and interactions with others. The goal is to replace the negative stigma associated with visits to the principal’s office with an opportunity to recognize students for going above and beyond.

“By recognizing the good happening every day, CHMS encourages students to continue making positive choices while creating a school culture where every Wildcat can thrive,” said Principal Catherine Westbrook. “The best way to start a Monday is to call students to the office to deliver positive referrals written by their teachers,” she added.

Research suggests positive referrals improve school climate, reduce negative behavior and boost student self-esteem, helping them feel valued and recognized for their strengths.

“We are so proud of our Wildcats for making great choices, showing kindness and being leaders at CHMS,” Westbrook said.
